Born and raised in Yellowknife, NWT, Jazz grew up with a massive appreciation for the wild outdoors. Every day, her family would bundle up and brave any arctic temperature and go play outside. Even in what seemed like the harshest of environments, her family found joy in trudging through the snow and skating on the ice roads, canoeing and fishing on the lakes, climbing on the rocks or skiing through the trees. Movement was always a big part of her life, but it wasn't until she stumbled onto a yoga mat that she understood why her mother rushed her out of the door at -40 degrees in the dead of winter. At the most basic and primal level, we all crave one thing: Connection. We want to feel connected to something greater then ourselves, to each other and to this earth that sustains us. The truest and simplest ways she has found to feel connected is by being in nature or by practicing and sharing yoga.
Jazz was a yoga skeptic for years until her overworked and exhausted body fell in a heap on a yoga mat as an elective course in University. Studying the human body and teaching through her Physical Education Degree while also playing on the Varsity women’s basketball team meant that while she knew deep down something was wrong, she continued to push and train until her heart (and body) screamed for change. In one of the hardest decisions she’s made, she walked away from her team, her degree and her full identity with no idea of what to do next. So, naturally, she ran away to the jungles of Costa Rica in February of 2010 to do a yoga teacher training.
In yoga, Jazz found a language of movement that was not defined by wins and loses, a practice that offered relief from her anxiety and fear of the unknown and a space to feel gracefully at HOME in her own body for the first time in her life.
Jazz teaches vinyasa flow style yoga that infuses that same intention of grace and freedom in movement and offers something for every body - even the skeptics! You are given space to challenge yourself and be playful, as every sequence creatively brings you closer to a peak pose to explore your potential. Mantra work, pranayama, heartfelt intention, soulful music and a sense of community are all important elements of her classes.
Jazz’s classes are fabricated with a creative curiosity of what is possible for each of us, discovering yourself suddenly in a shape asking “How did I get here?!” There is something for everyone no matter what your level of experience and you will always leave class feeling grounded and calm.
Jazz is the type of yoga teacher everyone needs to experience. Her classes leave you smiling bigger, thinking deeper, and loving life just a little bit more every time you walk out the door. Her creativity in sequencing and her ability to make you laugh always leaves me wanting more. She's the kind of yoga teacher I aspire to be, the right amount of laughs with a strong knowledge base to keep you on your toes.
After a decade long break from yoga classes, I found Jazz on the recommendation of a friend. I was immediately captivated by her warm energy, the variety of postures and creativity of movement in her classes and the authenticity and meaning in her words. She is like a breath of fresh air, a welcome home, an inspiration to those seeking connection between body, mind and spirit. She has that yoga magic where she knows exactly what to say that will resonate deeply on a given day, and when to be quiet and let us be still. She has taught me so much and I am so grateful to have found her. She is my superhero. If I could go to a Jazz class every day, I would.
